Aided by hundreds of both color and black-and-white photographs, the Duchess traces the history of the 36 generations of the family who have lived there, and proves an expert guide through the castle’s gorgeous rooms and collections.

BA1196: Your garden will never look the same once this beautiful statue has found a home. The Butterfly Fairy Statue from Brass Baron will bring out the natural beauty of your home and garden. This statue features a Verdigris (green-grey) patina finish. Details: -Dimensions: 21 H -Non-Fountain -Verdigris finish About Brass Baron and Lost Wax Casting The Brass Baron specializes in the design and production of brass fountains and sculptures that create excitement and elegance in all indoor and outdoor settings. The incredible detail inherent in our sculptures is created as each piece is cast in brass by the Lost Wax method, one at a time, ensuring exceptionally fine detail and lasting beauty. Our pieces are designed to convey feelings of sentiment, magic and amusement, and delight a discriminating clientele who appreciate craftsmanship 100 years behind the times… The exceptional detail inherent in our sculptures is created as each piece is cast by the cire perdue, or lost wax method, dating back to ancient Egypt and refined in Rome and later Paris. After a mold is created from an original sculpture, wax is poured into the mold, and after hardening and removing the mold, all the details are perfected. The wax impression is encased inside and out with refined clay. Once the clay sets, the wax impression is fired in a kiln; the wax melts out of the clay mold, and is lost. The void created by the melted wax in the clay mold is then filled with molten brass, which is identical to the wax impression it replaced. The clay mold surrounding and inside the sculpture is delicately removed, revealing the cast sculpture, which is subsequently finished by buffing, polishing and patinizing to give the piece its final verdigris (green-grey) or bronze lustre. This labor intensive method of lost wax casting produces unique sculptures with exceptionally fine detail of lasting durability, and which are aesthetically warm and ruggedly handsome. Each piece is cast and assembled

Joan of Arc: The Image of Female Heroism

Joan of Arc: The Image of Female Heroism

$0.99

Joan has a unique role in Western imagination–she is one of the few true female heroes. Marina Warner uses her superb historical and literary skills to move beyond conventional biography and to capture the essence of Joan of Arc, both as she lived in her own time and as she has “grown” in the human imagination over the five centuries since her death. She has examined the court documents from Joan of Arc’s 1431 Inquisition trial for heresy and woven the facts together with an analysis of the histories, biographies, plays, and paintings and sculptures that have appeared over time to honor this heroine and symbol of France’s nationhood. Warner shows how the few facts that are known about the woman Joan have been shaped to suit the aims of those who have chosen her as their hero. The book places Joan in the context of the mythology of the female hero and takes note of her historical antecedents, both pagan and Christian and the role she has played up to the present as the embodiment of an ideal, whether as Amazon, saint, child of nature, or personification of virtue. Author Biography: Marina Warner is a historian and novelist; among her books are No Go the Bogeyman: Scaring, Lulling, and Making Mock (1998), From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers (1995), and Alone of All Her Sex: The Myth and the Cult of the Virgin Mary (1983). She lives in London.

Once upon a Time: Walt Disney: The Sources of Inspiration for the Disney Studios

$51.67

While the works of Walt Disney rank among the icons of American mass culture, it is easy to forget that Disney’s characters and stories were inspired by original works of art. Now the sources that motivated Disney’s imagination-and the artists that his studio in turn influenced-are brought to light. From the launching of the Walt Disney Company until the founder’s death in 1967, this book includes more than 300 original works selected from the Disney archives and from private collections, together with paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and film stills. Here Disney fans will discover the fairy tales behind Sleeping Beauty and Snow White; they’ll learn that Pinocchio’s village was modeled on the medieval city of Rothenburg in Bavaria; that Bambi’s forest took its inspiration from fifteenth-century Chinese painting; that Dumbo’s bird’s-eye views drew on the work of Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Finally, the book looks at the myriad ways in which Disney’s products became source materials for modern and contemporary artists, including Prokofiev and Léopold Stokowski as well as Christian Boltanski, Bertrand Lavier, Peter Saul, and Gary Baseman. A wonderful sourcebook for Disney enthusiasts, this colorful volume offers a unique perspective on the often-overlooked links between highbrow and popular culture.

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Stone Mountain – The mountain is more than five miles (8 km) in circumference at its base. The summit of the mountain can be reached by a steep walk-up trail, which starts near the Confederate Hall and West gate entrance. Alternatively, the summit is reachable by the Skyride. The top of the mountain is a landscape of bare rock and rock pools, and it provides views of the surrounding area including the skyline of downtown Atlanta, often Kennesaw Mountain, and on very clear days even the Appalachian Mountains. On some days, the top of the mountain is shrouded in a heavy fog, and visibility maybe limited to only a few feet. The clear freshwater pools of the summit form by rainwater gathering in eroded depressions, and are home to unusual clam shrimp and the now believed extinct, fairy shrimp. The tiny shrimp appear only during the rainy season, and it is believed that the adult shrimp die when the pools dry up, leaving behind eggs to survive until the next rains. Leaves of the Georgia oakThe mountain’s lower slopes are wooded. The rare Georgia oak was first discovered at the summit, and several specimens can easily be found along the walk-up trail and in the woods around the base of the mountain. In the fall, the extremely rare Confederate Yellow Daisy (Helianthus porteri) flowers appear on the mountain, growing in rock crevices and in the large wooded areas. Stone Mountain is a pluton, a type of igneous intrusion. Primarily composed of quartz monzonite, the dome of Stone Mountain was formed during the formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains. It formed as a result of the upwelling of magma from within the Earth’s crust. This magma solidified to form “granite” within the crust five to ten m… http

A single sculpture by Oklahoma-born Petah Coyne might include a dozen materials ranging from the baroque to the kitsch in character-pearl-headed hatpins, ribbons, silk flowers, candies, powder, tar and feathers. Resembling enormous sentient chandeliers, they evoke a love of domestic materials, fairy tale arcana and biomorphic proliferation. I love it when they look past maintenance, Coyne has said of her sculptures, like a plant on somebody’’s porch that’’s kind of lost its mind. Her diverse bodies of work-from the early hanging black sand sculptures to the current works in wax and silk-share a sense of simultaneous strength and fragility. Though often unwieldy in size, they all appear vulnerable and delicate. This artist’’s book reflects Coyne’’s dialogue with organic form-whether natural or artificial, sentimental or campy. Included is an essay by critic and Art in America editor Ann Wilson Lloyd.

The Ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers: The Oldest Fairy Tale in the World

The Ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers: The Oldest Fairy Tale in the World

$24.66

What is the meaning of this story from antiquity, so similar in form to the European folktale? The “Tale of Two Brothers” describes a rite of passage, telling the the nearly universal story of a handsome and chaste young shepherd who rejects seduction by a powerful older woman and, after many adventures, becomes king. The story of this shepherd, Bata, is intertwined with that of his brother Anubis who, deceived at first, is unceasing in his efforts to restore his brother and eventually becomes king himself. The tale also has traits peculiar to ancient Egypt, notably that the main characters are gods as well as kings. Bata and Anubis are both divine figures connected with Egypts mortuary cults, and their story is replete with religious symbols of rebirth. Using comparative analysis, the author makes a major contribution to our understanding of a story that has puzzled folklorists for almost 140 years. At the same time, she constructs a model for examining ancient narratives, neither denying their cultural context nor allowing it to impede understanding. To provide this ancient context, Susan Tower Hollis utilizes a variety of works, including literary, mythological and wisdom texts, cultic materials, historical and political works, and Egyptian paintings, reliefs and sculptures. The second edition of this classic and long out-of-print text takes into account further scholarship on the “Tale of Two Brothers” since its original publication in 1990 and contains a new, updated bibliography.
