Would You Know How to Train a Dragon?

We all know that dragons aren’t real, but if they were, they wouldn’t exactly be the best pet you could choose to keep. But in a recent animated film, the question of how to train one of these beasts provided some amusing and entertaining subject matter.

As you might expect from an animation that comes from the DreamWorks Animation stable, it is well worth seeing and very amusing for all ages to watch. If you think of dragons you may well think about Vikings as well, and this is the world in which the film is set. The action centres on a Viking teenager who goes by the unfortunate name of Hiccup. However, since he lives in a fictional island known as Burp, You Can see that the boy’s name fits in rather well with the mythology of the film.

Hiccup is part of a tribe but he is not seen as being a very worthwhile part. If most modern teenagers feel somewhat disaffected and detached from their surroundings, they will recognise the same feelings in the character of Hiccup. He wants to fit in, but he is not seen as being old enough or strong enough to do it.

The island on which the film is set has a big problem however – dragons, and lots of them. In order to try and gain respect within his tribe, Hiccup ends up successfully shooting a dragon out of the sky. He doesn’t kill it though, and as a result when he tells his tribe about it, including his father, they will not believe he has done it. In the end he cannot finish the job and he decides to set the dragon free.

As a result of the injury that Hiccup inflicted on it, the dragon cannot fly again. As you might expect from a film of this type, Hiccup and the dragon (he gives it the name Toothless) become firm friends. The story develops from there and leads to some big changes for all the characters involved.

As with all the best animated films of this type, How to Train Your Dragon uses common themes that everyone will recognise from real life. While the setting is unusual and mythical in nature, the familiar themes make the story work in a way that is irresistible to watch. There are some wonderful comic and touching moments as well, which all add to the enjoyable nature of the film.

In fact, the next time you sit down to watch the How to Train Your Dragon DVD make sure you watch out for the nice touches and friendships displayed in the film. They almost make you want to have your own dragon as a pet – if they really existed.
